5 tips for catching a beautiful Outer Banks Sunrise


Check the weather and clouds the night before - a partly cloudy morning can make for the most dramatic/intense colors of purples/ pinks and then soft golds. Even if it's a bit windy, the sunrise can still be AMAZING. Trust me, the sunrise shots shown here were from VERY windy mornings but also partly cloudy. I am SO glad I showed up with my camera in hand to catch the beauty.

Pack the necessities

Bring layers, a blanket, and a cup of hot coffee. Even in the summer, the ocean breeze can be chilly before sunrise. Pack your blanket, hoodie and be sure to get up early enough to make a cup of hot coffee to bring along.

pick the right spot


The Atlantic- facing beaches - Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head give you the best unobstructed views. For an even quieter experience, venture even farther south to Hatteras, Rodanthe, or even farther Ocracoke. Post up near the Jennette's Pier in Nags Head for an iconic OBX backdrop for your photos and a huge bonus - there is public parking and restrooms. Down south in Hatteras you will most likely find yourself completely alone at sunrise, this is an extra serene spot for those looking to have a sunrise to themselves and images without sunrise walkers or any buildings obstructing the view. Below is the Kitty Hawk Pier (My personal favorite spot, there is also a public parking lot right before the access).

Be sure to arrive early

You will want to get to your spot about 20 minutes before sunrise, this way you will catch all of the changing colors. The most intense hues will normally be seen right before the sun actually appears.

Capture the moment mindfully


Take a few moments without your phone or camera to just be and take in the majestic view. Listen to the waves crash, watch the birds flying overhead, just be still and soak it in.
